BOOM Advertising: PETA Honors Morrissey
- June 15th, 2007 - Advertising, Design
International animal rights leaders PETA honored alt-pop singer Morrissey with the Linda McCartney Memorial Award for his years of outspoken support of animal rights. Pittsburgh based audio production house Big Science have been PETA advocates for many years as well as big Morrissey fans. They asked us to do something special to commemorate the event. BOOM designed and produced an ad that would run in the awards show program book.
“This was a Hollywood style, star-encrusted gala awards show in Los Angeles.” says BOOM creative director Scot Fleming, “Morrissey is not much of an awards show darling, but has been very vocal and steadfast in his staunch support of vegetarianism and animal rights over the years. We felt that at such an event, the message can sometimes take a backseat to the glitz. We wanted to celebrate Morrissey and PETA but still bring the animal rights message home. We thought the best way to position against the chatter would be to frame some of Morrissey’s own lyrics alongside some stark, arresting black and white images – just keep it really simple and blunt. We submitted several designs and ended up with two final pieces that were appropriate to the work that PETA does, offset by the classic lyrics to “Meat is Murder” by The Smiths. I think this is a great example of less being more, and letting the elements serve the message.”
